En 1638, alors qu'une grande partie de l'Europe chassait encore les sorci\u00e8res ou pendait les prostitu\u00e9es, Venise fit ce qu'elle faisait toujours : elle ouvrit un casino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ils l'ont appel\u00e9 Le Ridotto<\/strong> \u2014 \u00ab la salle priv\u00e9e \u00bb \u2014 mais tout le monde savait ce que c'\u00e9tait vraiment : une machine \u00e0 plaisir officiellement autoris\u00e9e. Pas seulement pour les jeux d'argent, mais pour tout ce qui pouvait \u00eatre achet\u00e9, \u00e9chang\u00e9 ou s\u00e9duit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Derri\u00e8re ses portes, cach\u00e9es pr\u00e8s de l'\u00e9glise de San Mois\u00e8, des nobles masqu\u00e9s pariaient des fortunes sur bassetta<\/em> et phare<\/em> Tout en sirotant un chocolat chaud, leurs mains gant\u00e9es caressant cartes et cuisses. Des pi\u00e8ces d'or tintaient sur les tables de marbre. Parfum et sueur se m\u00ealaient dans l'air. Mais personne ne venait ici juste pour les cartes. La v\u00e9ritable monnaie circulait entre les courtisanes masqu\u00e9es et leurs riches et t\u00e9m\u00e9raires clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C'\u00e9tait le terrain de jeu des femmes les plus dangereuses de Venise : les cortigiane oneste<\/strong>Elles n'\u00e9taient pas des prostitu\u00e9es. Elles \u00e9taient des artistes. Elles connaissaient aussi bien la po\u00e9sie, la politique que les conversations intimes. Elles ne vendaient pas leur corps, elles vendaient leur influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parmi les joueurs les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres se trouvait un jeune joueur ambitieux nomm\u00e9 Giacomo Casanova<\/strong>Dans ses m\u00e9moires, il a admis avoir perdu des fortunes enti\u00e8res aux tables du Ridotto, pour les r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer quelques heures plus tard dans des salons priv\u00e9s \u00e0 l'\u00e9tage, o\u00f9 certaines dettes pouvaient \u00eatre \u00ab ren\u00e9goci\u00e9es \u00bb apr\u00e8s des transactions intimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le Ridotto n'\u00e9tait pas un vice cach\u00e9 \u00e0 l'\u00c9tat. C'\u00e9tait l'\u00c9tat. Venise taxait chaque pi\u00e8ce, autorisait chaque bordel et surveillait chaque scandale, faisant de la luxure une exportation de plus, au m\u00eame titre que la soie et le sel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais ces nuits avaient un prix. De jeunes nobles perdaient des fortunes familiales enti\u00e8res en quelques nuits. Des dots disparaissaient. Des alliances politiques s'effondraient. Et toujours, planant derri\u00e8re les \u00e9pais rideaux de velours, l'ombre du chantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les ambassadeurs \u00e9trangers d\u00e9ployaient souvent des courtisanes comme espionnes, extorquant des secrets lors de chuchotements post-co\u00eftaux. Au moins deux scandales diplomatiques majeurs entre Venise et l'Autriche ont d\u00e9but\u00e9 par des conversations sur l'oreiller dans les appartements priv\u00e9s de Ridotto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans les ann\u00e9es 1770, le pouvoir de Venise s'affaiblissait, entra\u00eenant le d\u00e9clin du Ridotto. \u00c0 l'arriv\u00e9e de Napol\u00e9on en 1797, il ferma d\u00e9finitivement ses portes. Le b\u00e2timent existe toujours aujourd'hui, discr\u00e8tement int\u00e9gr\u00e9 \u00e0 l'H\u00f4tel Monaco & Grand Canal. Les touristes passent devant sans s'en rendre compte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais si vous restez immobile assez longtemps, vous pouvez presque l'entendre : le doux battement des cartes, les g\u00e9missements \u00e9touff\u00e9s derri\u00e8re les portes verrouill\u00e9es et les calculs minutieux des hommes qui venaient jouer, mais qui perdaient souvent bien plus que de l'argent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parce qu\u2019\u00e0 Venise, tout avait un prix.
